The next decision was to highlight the stunted growth they each had suffered, and to convey this I chose to leave out any element of sophistication from the score.  That meant that the music would convey a certain naiveté and would, when possible, be played without any vibrato or flourish.  I began looking for instruments that could express this naive simplicity yet still have emotional depth to them.  One of the first instruments I settled upon was a bowed psaltery, an early music string bowed instruments with a plaintive voice which felt appropriate.  

After having established a list of the cues to be composed, it became apparent to me that there would have to be distinctive themes and colors for each of the four girls, and that their respective personalities needed different musical interpretations.  Their identities reminded me of the contrasting qualities of the four elements, and I began to think of them as Fire, Air, Water and Earth which in turn became represented by four distinct instrument families: Percussive, Blown, Bowed, Plucked. Thus the sound of each girl became dictated by their personas:
